Focus on Progression

Homeschooling, while rewarding, comes with its fair share of challenges and moments of uncertainty. As parents, it’s our responsibility to guide our children and help them grow into their best selves. But what if we shifted our focus from our children’s weaknesses to fostering progression and leveraging their strengths? Let’s explore the power of this transformative approach.

The Power of “What Is the Next Step?”

Our role as parents is not to ignore our children’s issues, but rather than dwelling on their weaknesses, what if we embraced a more effective strategy? Instead of focusing on their flaws, we can start a practice of asking, “What is the next step?” or “What is the most important thing I need to focus on right now?” Ask in the moment and truly listen.

Set aside your agenda and desires, and get in tune with the Spirit of God to find the answers. Approach this question with love for your child. What does your child need that you’re not currently providing? Is it time, love, or guidance? This practice shifts the focus towards progression, inviting positive change, rather than the discouragement from dwelling on what’s wrong.

I implement this practice on Sunday, by taking the time to get still. I write down each of my children’s names in my journal and ask Heavenly Father what each of my children needs.  What is the next step?  I am amazed at the inspiration and direction that comes from this practice.  Writing it down slows my brain down enough to hear the whisperings of the Holy Ghost.  I am more able to receive personal revelation. If you feel frustrated with your child at a specific moment, pause and get still. In that moment, ask for inspiration on what you need to focus on, do, or say to inspire your child.

Side with the Hidden Asset

As homeschool parents, our role is to side with the hidden asset in our children, to minimize their deficiencies, intensify their experiences, and enlarge their lives. When we view the world through our children’s eyes, understanding their circumstances and struggles, we’re better prepared to respond helpfully.

Seeing Through the Eyes of Divinity

Practicing seeing your children through the eyes of divinity allows you to connect with a higher power and gain inspiration about their needs. Focusing on the light within each individual, rather than the darkness, is a powerful tool for transformation.

“I have discovered a great truth in my life: There is more power in drawing our children to the light within them than in driving them from the darkness,” as Wally Goddard wisely noted. Just as turning on a light in a dark room automatically dispels the darkness, focusing on your children’s strengths is like illuminating their souls. This is where the magic of transformation truly happens.

In conclusion, as homeschooling parents and mentors, let’s embrace the practice of “What is the next step?” and see the potential for progression in our children. By focusing on their strengths and connecting with divinity, we can help them shine and grow into the best versions of themselves. Remember, it’s not about eliminating their weaknesses but empowering them to embrace their hidden assets and become the amazing individuals they are meant to be.
